Ian Martin's work is on view through March in an unlikely space in SoHO, called W.i.P. (Work in Progress), located in an underground art space/nightclub at 34 Vandam St. Ian installed a total of six new works, including a nine foot tall figure and two double life-size busts.

Congrats to Ian Martin with his work on the restaurant Pulqueria. They serve authentic Mexican cuisine and are located on the historic Doyers St (11 Doyers) in the heart of Chinatown, and they are the first bar/ restaurant in the city to serve the ancient Aztec drink Pulque made from fermented nectar of the Agave plant.

Ian spent the greater part of 2011 designing and fabricating the restaurant with the artist Christopher Tierney. Together they hand built, painted, sculpted and designed all the major elements in the space. The most overtly sculptural element in the restaurant is a 1,000 pound plaster mural at the entrance of the restaurant that depicts the Aztec feathered serpent god, Quetzalcoatl, in intaglio.

Leading Wellington art gallery {Suite} is presenting two pop-up exhibitions at 95 Willow St, Tauranga.

Strive Towards Your Destiny group's three painters exhibited together for the first time in 2008 at City Gallery in Wellington. Irene Ferguson, Arie Hellendoorn and Douglas Stichbury draw their influences from a diverse range of sources, such as portraiture, motivational slogans, geometric abstraction and the principles of academic history painting.

Ferguson was a finalist in The BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery, London, in 2006, and won the New Zealand Portrait Gallery/Adam Award in 2008. She holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Fine Art, New York.

TAC hires new Oil Painting Instructor

The ArtsCenter is pleased to announce that is has hired several new painting and drawing instructors. One of them, Brian Kuebler, is taking over #2030 Painting Studio for Oils starting in March and will also be teaching Figure Painting in the summer.

Brian received his Bachelor of Art degree in Studio Art, with an emphasis in painting from the College of Charleston. In 2005 he earned his MFA in Painting from New York Academy of Art. He was awarded a scholarship award from the faculty members and received The Vasari Classic Oil Colors Award. He has shown in several galleries in and around New York CIty, receiving painting and sculpture commissions for private collectors. He has completed ceiling murals and other large decorative works throughout the United States and internationally. During his travels abroad, Brian has studied art in Venice, Rome, Paris, Amsterdam, among other European cities. His studio practice is informed by historic traditional methods and he explores this technical narrative in a largely representational oeuvre. He enjoys sharing his own research and studio methods with students while allowing them to discover their unique creative visions. Brian has recently moved to Raleigh with his wife and newborn son.

One-day portrait workshop with Sandra Stanton

The Harlow Gallery is hosting a one-day portrait workshop with Sandra Stanton on Sunday, March 25, 2012 from 9:30am -5pm.

The workshop will focus on the structure of the head and facial features, placement and proportion. The principles of light and shadow and a sample skin tone palette will also be discussed. In the morning, 9:30 to noon, students can expect to cover the basics, looking at the model and drawing. Reference handouts will be distributed. In the afternoon participants will be able to work from the model in any medium they wish to use and individual instruction will be provided. All levels of experience are welcome.

Tuition cost is $90 ($ 80 + $ 10 model fee) or $82 for current members of the Kennebec Valley Art Association ($ 72 + $ 10 model fee). Space is limited, please call the Harlow Gallery at 207-622-3813 to register for the workshop. A suggested materials list will be available to registrants.

About the instructor: Sandra Stanton has been working from the model for over 40 years. She has an MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art Graduate School of Figurative Art and studied at the Art Students League, New York, for seven years.Her work has been widely exhibited and published.

Last summer, 21 students spent a month in New York City studying at the New York Academy of Art. Figure drawing, painting and other art classes were just part of the experience for the students. Going to a wide variety of art galleries gave the students a fresh perspective to both timeless and current works of art.

“It’s pretty eye-opening for them and very exciting to watch them as they start to experience what’s really going on in the art world,” said John Volk, one of the professors in the art department that heads the trip every other year.

Stephanie lives in Manhattan with a studio in Brooklyn. She grew up in Brooklyn and studied studio art and graphic design at Manhattanville College and has a master’s degree in figurative sculpture from the New York Academy of Art. At first blush Bryan Drury's six compact panel paintings appear to be conventionally old-fashioned portraits of the kind of men and women who have the resources to commission faux-Renaissance pictures of themselves and their family members. But the closer you look, the weirder they seem. Mr. Drury, a recent graduate of the New York Academy of Art, produces an extraordinarily intense realism that registers pores, wrinkles and grainy skin textures as well as hair, jewelry, fabric and glassy eyes so exactingly that you might suspect a high-resolution photographic under layer. (There is none.)

"Hickory," a pen, ink and watercolor image produced on paper by noted illustrator Chris Duke (MFA 2003) has been selected as the winning artwork to represent the 136th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show February 13-14, 2012. Special thanks to board member Seán McCarthy for this great opportunity and the exposure it garners our artists!

For the second consecutive year, the contest was sponsored by the New York Academy of Art, which also selected five additional finalists, artists Laura Ellis (CE) Shauna Finn (MFA 2005), Julio Flores (MFA 2009), Debra Goertz (MFA 2000) and Benjamin Martins (MFA 2011). The winning image of the 2011 Best In Show winner will be utilized in a poster and in other club materials to promote the 2012 show.

The Cupping Room, in partnership with Indiewalls.com, is pleased to announce its first group art exhibition of 2012.

“Something About Her” brings together twenty-one female artists for a unique examination of femininity today. The group of artists is an international crowd, with origins ranging from Australia, Turkey, Alaska, Moldova, Philippines, England, Japan, Hawaii, China, and all corners of the United States.

Each artist currently resides in New York, and “Something About Her” is a culmination of their diverse perspectives and backgrounds. All of the women, with the exception of two 3rd year fellowship recipients, will graduate with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the New York Academy of Art this May.

While working in traditional media (oil painting, printmaking), the artists use established and historic processes to communicate contemporary female perspectives. Themes in the exhibition vary from fertility and motherhood, technology, identity, age, violence, sexuality, poverty, consumption, interpersonal relationships, beauty, and the sublime.

Indiewalls.com, currently in beta, is built around the symbiotic relationship between artists and non-traditional exhibition spaces. IndieWalls provides an online platform for artists to find alternative venues to display their work, and provides an easy online platform for consumers to purchase that artwork.

"Newspaper sculptor Will Kurtz discovers New York and his creative side after 50"

Those who don’t know any better would probably think Will Kurtz was just another young, emerging artist from Brooklyn.

After all, his debut exhibition at the Mike Weiss Gallery in Chelsea not only has a provocative title, “Extra F***ing Ordinary” and the tech-savvy concept of sculpting people whose photos he secretly took with his iPhone on the streets of New York, but Kurtz’s art emanates from his studio in Bushwick, the epicenter of the post-Williamsburg hipster artist set.

But Kurtz is in fact a gray-haired, 54-year-old former landscape architect from Flint, Mich.

Beijing Exhibition: Mutual Vision: Six Young Sino-American Artists' Exhibition

On December 15th, four students and alumni of the New York Academy of Art had their first exhibition of work completed during their residency at the University of Shanghai and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Corinne Beardsley, Mitchell Martinez, Wang Yi, Samuel Evensen, Cao Yi and Kiley Ames-Kliein participated in the residencies for two months working side by side with their CAFA and Shanghai colleagues helping to cement future programs for students, alumni and faculty. On November 7th, the Department of Continuing Education ran a promotional offer inviting users of the social media site LIVING SOCIAL to sign up for two different 6-hour workshops (Introduction to Figure Drawing or Introduction to Painting). The anticipated target was 100 to 150 students. The offer was posted at 8am, and by 6pm more than 823 people had PAID for one or both workshops! To accommodate the huge number of additional students several current MFA students and alumni have been hired to assist teaching these courses. We anticipate a much larger enrollment for the Spring, 2012 Continuing Education semester.

"I have long been a supporter of The New York Academy of Art, the first graduate school in the US devoted exclusively to figurative art. Through the efforts of President David Kratz and an extremely active board led by arts patron and historian Eileen Guggenheim, the NYAA has gone from a quiet, Tribeca-based school to a major international arts academy. The latest exhibition, titled Iconomancy, features artists like Will Cotton, Tat Ito, Natalie Frank, Amy Bennett, Ali Banisadr, Will Kurtz, and Peter Mühlhäußer. Having never seen this word “iconomancy” before, I turned to the explanation from the curators, Peter Drake, Dean of the Academy, and artist Jean-Pierre Roy: “Each of the artists are deeply invested in understanding the complexities of visual culture and transforming that culture through the alchemy of their own work, and as the title would suggest, there is some magic involved..." Hoboken Studio Tour artist Bachvarova's work: a dread-locked time warp?

"Sofia Bachvarova's work is ornate, demented, and decadent.

In Bliss, a headless stone figure is suspended from a rope, which hangs upside down. A stream of gold coins tumbles from its decapitated body. White doves fly heavenward.

In Venus, a Rubenesque figure stands in a garden overflowing with flowers and tiny beasts. A black apparition hovers in front of the figure's face, which makes identification impossible. In both paintings, Bachvarova alternates between fantasy and reality.

I recently caught up with Bachvarova as she made some final preparations for the annual Hoboken Artists Studio Tour. Her studio is located on the fifth floor of the Neumann Leathers building..." (read more)
