"Where the Stars Come Out, 2013", a pen, ink and watercolor image produced on paper by noted illustrator Chris Duke, has been selected as the winning artwork to represent the 138th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show February 10-11, 2014.
In her composition, Ms. Duke incorporates the nighttime skyline of Manhattan above the 2013 Westminster Best In Show and Group winners as they run with their handlers. She feels this fusion captures the exhilaration and energy of the show, which she loves. In the sky are canine constellations Canis Major and Minor - the stellar dogs that watch over and illuminate the festivities at Westminster. The winning image will be utilized in a poster and in other club materials to promote the 2014 show.
Ms. Duke was the official artist of the 2012 Westminster Dog Show as well, and a finalist in the 2013 competition. For the fourth consecutive year, the contest was sponsored by the New York Academy of Art (www.nyaa.edu), which also selected five additional finalists .
Ms. Duke is well known for her classical pen and ink style, in which she embellishes her art with geometric and textual elements that evoke the feel of a Leonardo da Vinci notebook. animals, flowers and architecture. Originally from Detroit, Ms. Duke was educated at The Parsons School of Design in New York and also holds a graduate degree in Figurative Studies from the New York Academy of Art. One of America's premier illustrators, she has worked for many Fortune 500 companies including American Express, AT&T, IBM, and Adidas, as well as publications including the New York Times, People Magazine and the Wall Street Journal. She is also the official portrait artist for The Players Golf Championship.
