NICOLAS V. SANCHEZ (MFA 2013, Fellow 2014) and AMBER SENA (MFA 2009)

Works by two Academy alumni will be shown in Venice during this year’s Biennale. Nicolas Sanchez (MFA 2013, Fellow 2014) and Amber Sena (MFA 2009) will be featured in “Personal Structures - Crossing Borders," a group show hosted by the European Cultural Centre, (referred to as the “European Pavilion.”) The exhibition will open on May 7th at the prestigious Palazzo Mora.

Both Sanchez and Sena were hand-picked by Global Art Affairs Foundation curator Carol Rolla to participate in “Personal Structures - Crossing Borders," an exhibition that explores notions of time and space.  Their new works, created specifically for this show, will be shown along with work from 50 participating international artists.  The exhibition reflects the Venice Biennale’s theme All The World’s Futures curated by Nigerian critic, poet and art historian Okwui Enwezor.

Sanchez will exhibit a single work comprised of five small books filled with drawings in colored ballpoint pen. The work explores ideas of inheritance and the identity that is simultaneously lost and created through preserving his family’s Mexican heritage.

Sena will present two large-scale paintings in oil and acrylic on wood panel.  Sena’s works will address the issue of rhinoceros poaching and extinction in contrast to the innocence and beauty of these mega-creatures.

Both artists are represented by Accesso Galleria in Pietrasanta, Italy and will be making their Venice debut during the Biennale.  Accesso Galleria focuses on emerging and mid-career artists with a strong emphasis on figurative art.  With a multi-national selection of artists, Accesso presents a variety of approaches, media and techniques.  For further information, please visit www.accessogalleria.com

The exhibition is open to the public from May 9th through November 22nd, 2015.

STEVE SHAHEEN (MFA 2005)

Congrats to Steve on all of his recent writings! Aside from his recent opinion piece in the April issue of Modern Painters magazine, considering the issue of authorship and authenticity in art, he also wrote a review of Folkert de Jong's compelling solo exhibit at James Cohan Gallery, on view through April 25.  The last two are conversational exchanges: first, some shop talk with sixteen accomplished sculptors (including Kiki Smith, Evan Penny, and Rona Pondick); secondly, a discussion of creating artwork by proxy, with curators Jessica Lin Cox and William Pym.
